Alex and Shannon thought homeownership was years away. Maybe five years. Maybe more. They were in their early 20s, fresh out of college, newly married, living in an apartment downtown. Building savings, establishing their careers, enjoying the freedom of being young and starting out.
To them, homeownership felt like something other people talked about.
Then one night in October 2024, they walked into a seminar at the downtown YMCA. An LMCU event about first-time homebuyers. Alex was curious. Shannon was excited. Neither expected what they would learn.
The moment everything changed.
"I remember them starting with, you know, most people who come to this event leave realizing that they're able to afford homeownership," Alex recalls. "I was like, okay, that's great. But we're in our young 20s. I literally just graduated this year. This isn't the year you work towards homeownership. And yet I was wrong."
Leaving that seminar, they discovered something they didn't know existed: down payment assistance. A grant that could make homeownership possible. Not in five years, but now.
"The down payment assistance program made the difference for us," Alex says plainly. "It would not be possible for us to be in this home without it."
For Shannon, the realization hit differently. "When we got pre-approved, that's when it was like, oh, this is happening right now in real time. You know, and there was this aspect of, we're so young, can we do this? But we just kept going."
They decided to keep moving forward, one step at a time. If something felt wrong, they could stop. But why not try?
The support that made it real.
What could have been overwhelming — the paperwork, the process, the terminology — never felt that way. Their LMCU loan officer was there every step.
"He was very genuine. Everything came really from the heart. He really cared about us having the best experience," Shannon says. "He took us every step of the way. I felt like we had different pieces of homework, but he allowed us to feel confident that we could actually take the time to do it well."
For Alex, it went deeper. "At the end of the day, we knew if we were confused about something, Mario would explain it to us. There was never a point where we asked a question and was like, 'well, this is just what it is.' Every question was met with an explanation or a reason."
He explained underwriting. He explained why condo association fees mattered. He answered questions about the inspection, the appraisal, the closing timeline. He pulled back the curtain on the whole process.
"When I think about the process of signing for the loan, getting the mortgage, how LMCU was very clear through the process — I'm very thankful for their intentionality," Alex reflects. "Not knowing what's going to come up is very difficult. But knowing what's coming next made the difference between actually getting it done or not."
From dream to reality.
In November 2024, they found their place — a condo in the same neighborhood where they'd been living. Close to where Alex works. Close to the downtown they'd grown to love. They put in an oSer that night. It was accepted within days.
By December, they were homeowners.
"It was a month, but it was a fast month," Alex remembers. "And I remember when they opened it up and gave us the key and said, 'here's your place.' And it's like, really?"
For Shannon, it was surreal. "In 2024, I actually graduated from college, got married, and then became a homeowner all within the same year. So, things that seemed impossible started to really feel possible."
What homeownership means now.
It's more than just owning a place. It's about freedom. Control. The ability to paint walls without asking permission. To host friends and family. To build community.
"Having our own place that is truly ours. Somebody is not going to come and do room checks or explain certain guidelines of how it's going to be set up. It just sets a different piece in your life," Alex says. "The freedom, the control that it brings. And then for us, the new relationships and families that have been built in this space. We've been able to host, which is something we found ourselves really passionate about."
For Shannon, it's about family and permanence. "Being able to entertain and have people over in this space is really comforting. Especially growing up with three siblings and my parents all in the same space all the time. Being able to offer that to other people just makes things feel more like home and more like family."
They walk to the grocery store. They take the bus downtown. They have a place where they truly belong. And that changes everything.
Why LMCU made this possible.
Alex is direct about what credit unions like LMCU mean for young people trying to build their futures: "A lot of people say what they want to do. Very few people actually put resources behind it. And that's what LMCU is about."
He points to the down payment assistance program as proof. "The down payment assistance grant was the difference. It truly was. We would not be here. We would not be able to even consider the idea of a home. I know so many of my peers who have been trying to become homeowners for a long time. They can afford the rent value. But even though the mortgage is the same, they can't afford the mortgage. And seeing a company who is so serious about changing that — that they have grants available — that tells you what they really think about people and where their focus is at."
It's not just about the grant, though. It's about how LMCU shows up. A First-Time Home Buyer seminar held after 6 p.m. so people who work can attend. A loan officer who answers questions with patience and clarity. A process explained in plain language, not banking jargon. Resources available when you need them.
"Our LMCU experience has been very friendly, very simple. But it gets to the point and gets us to the place that we need to be," Shannon says. "And it supports us feeling confident in our financial decisions and the things that we're doing more day to day."
The dream wasn't impossible. It just needed the right partner.
For Alex and Shannon, homeownership felt impossible a year ago. Today, they're hosting dinners in their own space, building community in Grand Rapids, planning their future from a place they own.
They're 25 and 22. They're homeowners. And they're proof that when a financial institution truly prioritizes member success over profit, impossible things become possible.
Their story could be your story.
If you're a first-time homebuyer and you think homeownership is years away, you might be wrong. Like Alex and Shannon, you might be closer than you think.
